Digitalise or die : new tools for the Construction Sector
The global inefficiency of the construction sector is failing to deliver long awaited solutions to cope with climate change and societal and productivity challenges. This is mainly caused by the very nature of a major industrial sector (10 % of the EU GDP) structurally hindered by multiple fragmented stakeholders with an endemic incapacity to innovate, coming from an extremely low investment in R&D with consequently low productivity figures, worldwide. Indeed, the construction sector needs to “modernise or die” as a recent report cleverly states, and digital technology offers essential tools to both efficiently communicate and store data, and optimize the management tasks and quality checks, from the assessment or preparation phase towards the design and execution phases and further handover and operation. Among digital tools, it’s widely accepted nowadays that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the cornerstone to meet the growing technical complexity of the sector, to overcome the fragmentation of the construction process and problems of communication between stakeholders, spot errors before they happen, reduce time and improve quality.
This event is focused on two European H2020 projects coordinated by NOBATEK/INEF4, both making the most of new BIM related technologies and digital opportunities for more efficient buildings. BUILT2SPEC is coming to an end this year and has demonstrated how building owners, construction companies, designers, and technology providers can integrate digital tools and new technologies for self-inspection and quality checks, to ensure a better quality and performance of buildings (“Built as Designed”). BIM4REN is a new project, focusing on innovative digital solutions around BIM, tailored for the specific needs of different stakeholders of the residential building renovation value chain.
This event is both an opportunity to celebrate the success story of BUILT2SPEC project, and to raise the interest about the very promising BIM4REN project.
